Halsey’s back with new single “Nightmare” and it may become the female anthem of 2019.
The song is filled with the anger and frustration females feel in today’s society. The single touches on body insecurity, being told what to do with our bodies, and constantly being told to smile, especially when there’s nothing to smile about. Cleverly written lyrics like “I’m tired and angry, but somebody should be,” show the relevance the song has with today’s news. Message of the song? Women are strong, women are fierce, and women will stand up for themselves.
The music video portrays Halsey, surrounded by an all-female cast, dressed up as a pin-up girl, being a girl boss in a suit, looking all luxurious in lingerie, etc. Actors Cara Delevingne and Suki Waterhouse, along with Blondie frontwoman, Debbie Harry, all make appearances as well.
As for where her inspiration came from, Halsey tweeted that she was inspired by the young women at her shows who are “sweating mascara tears, lightning in their eyes, throwing elbows, and raising fists.” She continued to say that this song is about them, for them.
imagine getting onstage every night and seeing young women sweating mascara tears, lightning in their eyes, throwing elbows and raising fists, screaming till the veins in their necks raise under warm skin,
and not being inspired by it.
this song is about you, for you.

Halsey has always been an outspoken feminist, and even gave an emotional speech at last year’s Women’s March in 2018.
“Nightmare” is Halsey’s first solo single of 2019. Her other releases include collaborations with Yungblud and Blink 182’s Travis Barker on “11 Minutes,” and BTS on “Boy With Luv,” which she performed live with them at the Billboard Music Awards earlier this month.
