Hayley Kiyoko Returns To Social Media, Announces New Musical Project

Wed, October, 9 by RACHEL KELLY

Lesbian Jesus has risen! After laying low for several months, Hayley Kiyoko has announced she is coming back with a new musical project.

On Instagram today, the singer posted some jarring artwork of her embracing a topless woman with a red, scrawled title “I’m Too Sensitive For This Shit.” In the accompanying caption, she announced that she will be gradually releasing a “collection of songs” from now to January that focus on her struggles with mental health.

I find myself constantly discovering who I am while battling new demons. Everyday is something new. Sometimes it’s scary to face head on as it challenges us to be braver. Maybe our brains just tick a little differently. Maybe we have a monster inside our head trying to distract us. Maybe we are always looking for a reason to run. Whatever it may be, this internal struggle is what makes us complex, special beings who deserve to find strength. Because we will. 🙂 Soooooo as a tribute to this journey, I’m going to release a collection of songs from now through January. This project is about all of these feelings I’ve been learning to embrace because they are what make me, well, me. And it’s dedicated to you. I hope you love them like I love you. Kiyoko is known for having an active and engaging presence on social media—she often tweets at fans, she posts silly Instagram stories with her manager, and is the queen of a good tourist pic. But after the European leg of her tour wrapped in the spring, Kiyoko retreated from the spotlight. Her Instagram stories became less frequent and her posts were more promotional than candid. In July, she released her new single, “I Wish,” but was mostly absent from Instagram for the whole month apart from promotional shots of the song’s music video. She wasn’t fully ghosting, but fans noticed her vibe was off and started asking where she went.

The singer took to Instagram yesterday to explain that she was having a hard time balancing her mental health with work.

“Yes, I have been MIA, and I apologize for that,” she said. “I’ve just been going through self-image issues. I gained a lot of weight, I was on anti-depressants, and I got really depressed.”

“I’m on the other side, made it through, and I know you can to,” she said.

She closes out her video by saying “I’m here, I’m back!”

There is very little known about the collection, or how it will differ from a proper album, but it will likely give fans insight into what the pop star has been going through the last few months.

Welcome back, Hayley, we missed you!
