Get ready to say bye to our Girls—E! Online has reported that Lena Dunham’s HBO series may be ending in 2017.
The announcement comes just before the series fifth season’s premiere date and before the confirmation of a sixth season. Though HBO has declined to comment, rumours of the series ending have been floating around for a while.
“Never say never, but that is the way we’re thinking about it right now and we’re starting to think about sort of how to wrap up the storylines of these particular young women,” Dunham said last September.
Co-showrunner Jenni Konner has also been quoted hinting at a season six end date for the series.
“Once we figure out what season five is, we’ll know whether it’s another year,” she said last year, “Maybe it’s just one more year, maybe we wrap it up in six. It all depends. But also we’re not in the business of running it into the ground. We would like to end in a graceful place. And we’d like to tell a complete story. What that means is that we really have to start building towards an end soon, creatively.”
But even if the series is ending, we still have two full seasons ahead of us to look forward to. Girls returns to HBO on Sunday Feb 21.
