The 2015 American Music Awards had no shortage of musical performances during last night’s annual show, which saw Canadians sweep both in performances and podium visits. From make-outs to more costume changes that you can count (don’t worry, we kept track) here’s everything that happened at the AMAs.
Host Jennifer Lopez opened the show with a short performance of Waiting For Tonight and sounded better, than, well, ever. J Lo has never been known for her strong vocals, but the New York native was at the top of her vocal game and her dancing game as well, going into a five minute dance routine set to the biggest songs of the year. That woman continues to Benjamin Button us all.
The Weeknd took home the first win of the night with his album Beauty Behind The Madness, Winning Best R&B album. We’ll give him another award if he can tell us where to buy Prince’s three-eyed sunglasses.
5 Seconds of Summer scored the first performer slot of the night, singing Hey Everybody! and getting fellow Aussie Rebel Wilson dancing in the aisle. We don’t blame her. Those dudes know how to write a catchy song.
There was no shortage of musical moments throughout the three hour show, which focused heavily on the biggest pop stars of today. Meghan Trainor and Chalie Puth may have had the biggest shocker of the night with their really intense, really long, really unexpected make out session. Ariana Grande came in a close second by ditching her tademark ponytail, but it’s pretty difficult to beat a PG kiss.
Gwen Stefani’s heartbreaking performance of Used To Love You made us dig out our old No Doubt records, while Macklemore and Leon Bridges received a well-deserved standing ovation for their emotionally and politically charged performance of Kevin.
Alanis Morissette also had us rummaging through our old CDs with her performance of You Oughta Know, but the 20 year celebration of Jagged Little Pill definitely felt like a missed opportunity to perform with longtime fan and fellow Canuck Justin Bieber instead of Demi Lovato. Or you know, alone. Morissette sounds just as incredible as she did when the song first hit the airwaves in 1995. Well, there’s always the Juno Awards.
Coldplay’s performance of Adventure of a Lifetime reminded us that Drake totally stole his Hotline Bling moves from the years of dancing material Chris Martin has provided the world.
The evening was eventually closed by a water-filled performance from Justin Bieber, who unfortunately chose dancing under a waterfall over singing live. The theatrical setting was cool, Justin, but singing live is even cooler.
