Here’s Why Will Smith Won The MTV Movie Awards Generation Award

Will Smith didn’t just win the Generation Award at last night’s MTV Movie Awards, no. He is the Generation Award. No one will ever figure out why they waited so long to present Smith with this award but as they say, better late than never.

The Generation Award has been handed out since 2005, first being given to Tom Cruise. Other past winners include Ben Stiller, Reese Witherspoon, Jamie Foxx and Mark Wahlberg. And no shade at them, but they aren’t Will Smith.

This is a man who has been in hit movie after hit movie. Between 1995 and 2008, his movies grossed almost $2.5 billion in the U.S. alone.

Let’s just say every movie ticket was approximately $10. That means almost 250-million Americans watched a Will Smith movie in theatres over those 14 years. Hypothetically, if each view was by a different person, you could simply remove California, Florida and Illinois from America and every other person in the country went to their local theatre and watched Will Smith do his thing.

The man is a living legend. A bad boy, a man in black, a cowboy, a boxer, a superhero, a heroic father and even an animated fish and dating coach in between—Will Smith can do no wrong.

Here are some more reasons Will Smith completely deserved last night’s MTV Movie Awards Generation Award.

He was the freakin’ Fresh Prince

The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air is one of the classic sitcoms of the ’90s and that’s primarily due to Will Smith being absolutely hysterical on it. Sure, Smith overacted a lot of scenes. But it was so perfect and fit with the show’s writing and tone. He’s always stayed true to his roots in comedy, adding a that slice of comedic flavour into almost all of his roles since.

He’s one of the greatest living action stars

If you’ve ever had a long day and just want to sit on the couch and watch a classic action-film, Smith is your man. The Bad Boys movies are two of his most entertaining flicks and also two of Michael Bay’s best. Slow-motion, explosions, slow-motion explosions… what more could you want? Just in case you don’t keep tabs on the Bad Boys franchise like we do, there’s reportedly two new installments to the franchise coming in 2017 and 2019.

He can make you laugh, sure, but he can also make you cry

Whether your allergies were just acting up, you were cutting onions, sitting in a dusty room, or you started sweating from your eyes—you’re not alone.

Basically, He Is Legend

There’s really only a few actors who could have pulled off his role in I Am Legend. A movie that features Smith almost entirely alone, he still makes talking to mannequins look like something you might want to do. To be fair, the guy could make knitting look cool. There may never be another actor who can simultaneously pull off tough and funny as effortlessly as Will Smith does. He’s the very definition of the Generation Award.

Oh, and After Earth and Wild Wild West never happened.
