Beefs, Boycotts, Weddings, And More Of The Biggest Social Media Moments Of 2018

Nicki Minaj, Cardi B, Ariana Grande, Pete Davidson, Nick Jonas, Priyanka Chopra

In 2018, we saw love blossom with new couples and die a few deaths with others. The rap game had its fair share of beefs, and celebs with a huge following used their platform to share their struggles with mental health and help remove the stigma around the issue.

From engagements to weddings, controversies to Cristiano Ronaldo, in 2018, if it didn’t happen on social media, did it really happen?

Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson Live Out Their Romance On Instagram

Pete Davidson and Ariana Grande redefined the term ‘whirlwind romance’ in 2018. Starting with an Instagram pic of the pair in matching Harry Potter robes to announce their relationship, the couple shared intimate moments from their romance, which included a quickie engagement that sadly ended in October. The exes appeared to be keeping things amicable, but with reports that Davidson has blocked Grande on social media and from visiting him at work on SNL, it looks like the couple that we really wanted to see happy won’t be finding their bliss together.

Selena Gomez Announces Her Social Media Break

In September, Selena Gomez posted a smiling selfie and announced that she would be taking a break from social media. The singer and actor checked into a treatment facility shortly after to work on her mental health. Since taking her break, Gomez dropped out of the top spot for most followed person on Instagram, with Cristiano Ronaldo now holding that title. Gomez still boasts 144 million followers, so yeah, being number two isn’t a big deal.

Justin Bieber and Hailey Baldwin Announce Their Engagement And Marriage

In 2018, we had to accept the fact that Jelena was dead. Justin Bieber and Hailey Baldwin rekindled their romance this year, took to social media to announce their engagement five minutes later, and got married about 10 minutes after that. And we’re rounding up.

Cardi B And Nicki Minaj Fight At Fashion Week

Cardi B and Nicki Minaj took their feud from diss tracks to real life at New York Fashion Week this year. During a party hosted by Harper’s Bazaar, Cardi reportedly threw a shoe at Nicki’s head. The feud continued on social media after Nicki liked posts that questioned Cardi’s competency as a mother. You don’t mess with moms. The pair later squashed their beef, but we have a feeling this isn’t over yet.

Drake And Pusha T Beef On Songs And Social Media

Nicki and Cardi weren’t the only rappers beefing this year. Drake and Pusha T’s feud started when Pusha T revealed in one of his song’s that Drake has a son. The Toronto rapper responded with a diss track of his own, which lead to Pusha posting an image of Drake in black face that was shot years ago for an art piece Drake was part of to show how black actors are often exploited in the entertainment industry. The whole situation was a mess.

Nike Debuts Their Colin Kaepernick Ad

Nike celebrated the 30th anniversary of their ‘Just Do It’ campaign by partnering with ousted NFL player Colin Kaepernick, who sparked outrage and a social and political movement when he refused to stand for the national anthem while playing for the San Francisco 49ers. Kaepernick’s move made him the poster boy for the Black Lives Matter movement, with Nike making their own controversial move by featuring Kaepernick in their anniversary ad. The partnership led to some people boycotting the athletic brand, but Nike didn’t seem to mind. The swoosh saw an increased value of $6 billion following the release of the ad over Labour Day weekend.

Demi Lovato Posts Her First Pic Post-Overdose

On July 24, Demi Lovato was rushed to the hospital after accidentally overdosing in her home in Los Angeles. The singer was surrounded by friends and family as she privately recovered first in the hospital and later in a treatment facility and sober living house. Lovato shared her first post-overdose photo in November, posing at a polling booth and encouraging her millions of young fans to vote in the U.S. midterm elections.

Kevin Hart Resigns as Oscar Host

Kevin Hart’s long-awaited gig as the host of the Academy Awards came to an abrupt end before it even started. Just hours after he announced he was hosting the prestigious award show, old tweets of Hart using homophobic slurs were found online. Rather than apologize, which Hart said he’s done in the past, he decided to step down as host. None of this was nearly as funny as we though Hart hosting the Oscars would be.
