It’s been a while since we heard from English singer-songwriter James Bay, who released his sophomore album Electric Light last spring. Thankfully, he returns with new music today, premiering a new single, “Peer Pressure,” with rising pop artist Julia Michaels.
The new track brings us back to the soulful rock sound Bay debuted on his 2015 LP Chaos and the Calm and makes us want so much more from James x Julia. The pair’s voices blend together smoothly as they sing about that one person who tempts you with their love.
In a release, Bay shared, “I think it can be easy to stay very guarded in life, and not let anybody in, past your personal armour. … In writing ‘Peer Pressure’ Julia and I wanted to talk about how, when the right person comes along, they can break through any armour and with love, get straight to you.”
“James is an incredible songwriter and amazing talent,” Michaels added. “Writing ‘Peer Pressure’ was a great collaborative experience because we had so much fun in the studio and the song came from a place we could both relate to.”
Leading up to the single’s release, Bay and Michaels shared plenty of cute selfies that had us double tapping for days. We anticipate the music video to be just as intimate and adorable.

While any joint performances have yet to be announced, there are plenty of opportunities to catch both artists on tour. Bay is about to head out on the road, with Canadian stops in Toronto on March 14 and Montreal on March 16.
Michaels will also stop in Canada as she opens for Pink on her Beautiful Trauma Tour in Vancouver on April 5 and 6, Toronto on May 13 and 14, and Montreal on May 17 and 18.
