If you’ve ever wanted an adult version of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, Jason Derulo is your new candy man. The singer has teamed up with Nicki Minaj and Ty Dolla $ign for the not-so-subtle “Swalla,” an R-rated ode to women. Pass the cotton candy.
Derulo’s pop sensibilities are as present as ever on “Swalla,” showing off his talent for combining sexually suggestive lyrics with Top 40 beats. Ty Dolla $ign and Nicki Minaj take care of infusing the opening and closing of the track, with Minaj using her bars to show off why she’s one of the greatest rappers of all time. Possibly extending her feud with fellow MC Remy Ma, Minaj raps, “Bless her heart, she’s throwing shots / But every line sucks.”
Director Gil Green was behind the camera for the confectionery-infused video, having previously teamed up with Derulo on 2014’s “Stupid Love.” The technicolour video includes Derulo showing off his dance background with a group of female dancers, while in a later shot he sports a black crown as he lays next to a woman covered in body paint.
“Swalla” signals a new era for Derulo, who has distanced himself from his trademark singsong of his name in every song. Closing the track with a simple “Derulo,” the singer has now entered the second, more hard-hitting phase of his career. Well, as hard-hitting as a person can be surrounded by lollipops.
As for Minaj, the Young Money rapper has recently dropped her own songs “No Frauds” with Drake and Lil Wayne, “Changed It” with Lil Wayne and “Regret in Your Tears.”
