We used to think the best thing in music was seeing a new up and coming Canadian artist killing it on the charts both home and abroad, but we were wrong. The best thing is seeing two artists lifting each other up on their way to world domination.
Case in point, Jessie Reyez and Daniel Caesar. Both Toronto singers have become two of the most sought-after entertainers of the past two years, earning critical acclaim and commercial success both at home in Canada and around the world. On Sunday night, Reyez and Caesar both performed at the JUNO Awards and took home statues, with Caesar winning R&B Recording of the Year for Freudian and Reyez taking home the award for Breakthrough Artist of the Year.
For her performance, Reyez was joined on stage by Caesar to sing her breakthrough track “Figures.” Reyez earned one of the biggest lead ups to her performance from host Michael Buble, who declared 2018 the year of Jessie Reyez. We’re down with that.
Making a surprise appearance halfway through the song, Caesar added new lines to “Figures” and delved deeper into the level of vulnerability in the already beautifully raw track.
Thankfully, the pairs’ performance on Sunday night wasn’t just a one-off. Following the show and her win of Breakthrough Artist of the Year, Reyez released “Figures, A Reprise” featuring Daniel Caesar on her social media accounts. That means we can sing-cry to the new duet anytime we want.
So, Jessie Reyez and Daniel Caesar tour for 2018?
