JoJo has sent the haters to the left with rapper Remy Ma on “FAB” and owned her decisions on “Fuck Apologies” with Wiz Khalifa, but now, the R&B singer is slowing things down in an ode to her supporters.
JoJo’s love letter to her parents comes in the form of her new single “Music.”, part of her highly anticipated upcoming third studio album Mad Love.
Displaying the vulnerability and honesty that helped create JoJo’s loyal following of listeners, “Music.” touches the financial and emotional support she received from her mother, as well as her father’s struggle with addiction and death last year.
The new video is full of footage from JoJo’s childhood, including TV interviews and singing competitions. The emotional trip down memory lane also includes shots of JoJo’s parents smiling and cheering for their young daughter, who first rose to stardom in 2004 at the age of 13 with her track “Leave (Get Out).”
In “Music.” JoJo sings about her current state of grief over losing her late father, saying, “Went on the road to make my daddy proud / But I lost him and so I sang to the crowd / My only hope is that he’s looking down / Thinking, Oh my god, my daughter’s doing it now.”
This isn’t the first time JoJo has turned to music to help cope with the passing of her father. Last year she released the single “Save My Soul,” a song inspired by her father’s addiction. The video for the personal track was shot by JoJo’s close friend Zelda Williams, who lost her famous father Robin two years ago.
JoJo’s Mad Love is set to be released October 14, and we think it can’t come soon enough.
