Long-time songwriter to the stars Julia Michaels has lined up a few A-list collaborations of her own for her new EP, Inner Monologue Part 1.
Sharing the tracklist on Instagram, Michaels revealed that friends Selena Gomez and Niall Horan will be featured on the record, which is due out this Friday. Gomez will help open the six-track EP with the autobiographical “Anxiety” while Horan joins in on the closer “What A Time.”
Best known for her 2017 debut single “Issues,” as well as songwriting credits for artists including Ed Sheeran, Hailee Steinfeld, and Gomez, Michaels has never shied away from releasing music that is deeply personal and meaningful. Inner Monologue Part 1 should be no exception.
“Couldn’t be more nervous if I tried,” the breakout star shared online. “But here’s a piece of my mind and my heart… it’s yours next week.”
But this isn’t the first time fans will be hearing some of the new material. Michaels first previewed “Anxiety” with a solo acoustic performance in December. From the sounds of it, the track is an intimate account of her own experience with the mental health issue. “Feel like I’m always apologizing for feeling / Like I’m out of my mind / When I’m doing just fine,” she sings.
Michaels opened up about her struggles with anxiety in an essay for Glamour magazine, where she described pushing herself to follow her dreams despite feeling overwhelmed. “Once I’ve made up my mind about something[,] I go all in. So the day I made the decision to become an artist, there was no going back. I wanted this, and it was time to face my fears,” she wrote.
Gomez is a strong fit for the track, having candidly discussed her own experiences with anxiety, a side effect of her lupus. “I think it’s a battle I’m gonna have to face for the rest of my life, and I’m OK with that because I know that I’m choosing myself over anything else,” she told Harper’s Bazaar last year.
Michaels also previewed “What A Time” when she opened for Maroon 5 last fall, then teasing the lyrics of the track on her Instagram.
Horan shared his excitement on Twitter, posting, “Julia is one of my very very good friends and ‘what a time’ is absolutely stunning . I’m very proud to be part of this and can’t wait for you guys to hear it .”
Following the release of Inner Monologue Part 1, Michaels will be hitting the road, headlining a handful of dates before joining Pink’s Beautiful Trauma Tour as the opening act. Tour stops north of the border include Vancouver on April 5 and 6, Toronto on May 13 and 14, and Montreal on May 17 and 18. See a full list of dates here.
