Turn on the radio and there’s a good chance the song playing was written by 23 year-old Julia Michaels.
Michaels and her writing partner Justin Tranter have been the team behind some of the biggest songs of the past three years, including Justin Bieber’s “Sorry,” Fifth Harmony’s “All In My Head (Flex),” Britney Spears’ “Slumber Party,” Hailee Steinfeld’s “Love Myself,” Gwen Stefani’s “Make Me Like You,” and Nick Jonas’ “Close” to name a few. Much of Michaels’ work has been with Selena Gomez, writing eight of the tracks from Gomez’s 2015 album Revival, including the singles “Hands To Myself,” “Me & The Rhythm” and “Good For You.”
Michaels’ latest songwriting credit is from Ed Sheeran’s new album Divide, with Michaels helping to write the track “Dive.”
Now, the songwriter is starting a singing career of her own, having already collaborated with Kygo on last year’s “Carry Me,” which she performed during the closing ceremonies of the Summer Olympics in Rio.
The American singer-songwriter is to extending her role from the recording booth to the stage, dropping her first single “Issues” in January. Michaels has now released a music video for the single, looking just as comfortable in front of the camera as she is in the recording booth.
The infectious track gets the visual treatment, with Michaels lamenting over the ins and outs of dealing with personal issues while also trying to maintain a relationship. Michaels and her love interest spend time between the sheets and hanging out at a house party, all while balancing their love for one another and themselves.
Julia Michaels is expected to released her debut EP sometime this year and considering her track record, it’s going to be awesome.
