If you found Kanye West’s “Famous” video a little too, ahem, risqué, your favourite stars made an alternate version for you to enjoy in public without getting side glances from strangers.
British hosting duo Ant & Dec, Justin Bieber, Carly Rae Jepsen, Troye Sivan, Nick Jonas, Meghan Trainor, Craig David, Cheryl and 5 Seconds of Summer get intimate in this G-rated parody of “Famous”. And by intimate, we mean awkward small talk while fully clothed. Making fun of themselves, Bieber whispers silly descriptions about himself to Cheryl and Trainor gives an infamous “No” to all of Sivan’s questions. Meanwhile, Jepsen professes she really, really, really likes Jonas, and he responds with, “I have to wear leather these days just to stay warm when I’m next to you.”
The original Kanye video included nude wax and prosthetic figures of Bill Cosby, Taylor Swift, Donald Trump, Rihanna, Chris Brown, Ray J, Caitlyn Jenner, George Bush, Anna Wintour, Kim Kardashian and West himself. According to West, he included these specific celebrities because they had an impact or influence on his path to fame. In a since-deleted tweet, West asked: “Can somebody sue me already #I’llwait.”
Unsurprisingly, it sparked debate online whether it was a work of art or just plain weird. An essay from Lena Dunham called the video “sickening” and “one of the more disturbing ‘artistic’ efforts in recent memory.”
While it’s not as uncomfortable as the original, we admit this version’s still a little weird.
