Get ready to travel back to the early 2000s.
R&B singer-songwriter Khalid has released a throwback music video for “OTW” featuring 6LACK and Ty Dolla $ign. The video is a nostalgic one straight from the era of early 2000s R&B with velvety visuals and old school tech that has us caught in a summery dream from our younger years. Check out the video for “OTW” below.
Directed by Calmatic, the new music video sees the trio perched on the hood of a car in matching puffy bomber jackets, taking part in synchronized choreography while they try to organize a rendezvous with their love interests, who are in the middle of a slumber party.
Calling up their girls the more traditional way—on a pink landline—Khalid croons on the television in the background, giving us nostalgia for a time when music videos played on cable networks. The video furthers its throwback vibes by including other past technology like a Kodak Printomatic camera, a T-Mobile Sidekick (because who didn’t want one of those back in 2002?), plus a vintage-style TV commercial for the song. The clip has dreamy summer slow jam written all over it.
“OTW” follows Khalid’s single “Love Lies” with former Fifth Harmony member Normani. These latest from the Georgia native hopefully mean his highly anticipated sophomore LP is finally on the way. The 20-year-old R&B singer confirmed in a recent interview with Billboard that a new album would drop before the end of the year, but there’s been no news yet on a title or possible release date.
Khalid’s second studio album will follow his wildly successful debut American Teen, which was released before he had even graduated high school in 2017 and earned him five Grammy nominations, including one for Best New Artist.
Since the release of his debut record, Khalid has been featured on a number of songs like Calvin Harris’s “Rollin” with Future, “1-800-273-8255” with Logic and Alessia Cara, “Silence” with Marshmello, “Lovely” with Billie Eilish, and “Youth” with Shawn Mendes. The young artist is clearly no stranger to mainstream music collaborations, and might be seen on another new track very soon.
“[Khalid]’s from El Paso, TX. We’re going there to DJ, and he’s going to pull up to the party. We’ll see what El Paso brings,” teased Majid Al Maskati.
Khalid is currently wrapping up his headlining tour in support of American Dream before joining the festival circuit this summer across Europe, Australia, and North America.
