Kid Cudi’s most recent headlines haven’t exactly been celebratory for the rapper and actor. After denouncing Kanye West and Drake in September on his Twitter account, claiming the two artists were no longer supportive of Cudi, the 32 year-old posted a lengthy Facebook message detailing his recent struggle with depression and suicidal thoughts, before checking into a rehab facility.
Cudi’s name was again in the news last week when Drake premiered three new tracks from his upcoming playlist, with the song “Two Birds One Stone” making tone-deaf remarks about Cudi’s struggle with depression.
Now, West has come out publicly to say that he supports Cudi, with Big Sean also rapping about Cudi in a positive light in his new track “No More Interviews,” saying, “When I put you on that song with Nas, you had told me that you was forever grateful / And that we brothers, so it hurt to hit the internet to find out that me and you don’t fuck with each other / Over a miscommunication that probably could be fixed with a five-minute conversation / I’m still praying for ya, though, I guess I charged it to the game.”
The good vibes are continuing for Cudi thanks to his new single and video for “Surfin’,” which features A$AP Rocky, Willow Smith and Jaden Smith. Shot with the same jungle backdrop as “Frequency,” the new video is all about partying, dancing, and letting the good times roll. Directed by Cudi, “Surfin'” features arrangements from Pharrell Williams—who knows a thing or two about making contagiously happy music.
Let’s hope “Surfin'” signals a new, positive chapter in Cudi’s personal life and career.
