We knew the Kardashian-Jenner family was powerful, but we had no idea one of its members had enough of a following to affect one of the world’s biggest tech companies.
Earlier this week, Kylie Jenner took to Twitter to talk to her 24.5 million followers not about makeup nor her newborn child, but about Snapchat. “sooo does anyone else not open Snapchat anymore? Or is it just me” Jenner tweeted casually.

It’s an innocent enough question, right? Apparently not. Dozens of Jenner’s fans immediately replied to the tweet, expressing similar negative sentiments about Snapchat’s relevance and redesign. And accordingly, Snap Inc. has already lost around $1.3 billion in market value.
The television personality and entrepreneur sent out her latest social media-centric tweet just a couple of weeks after expressing doubts about Snapchat’s latest update, which features a completely different and slightly confusing layout. And while Jenner clarified that she “still love[s]” Snapchat a mere 10 minutes after sending the original tweet, at that point the damage was already done.
At one point, Jenner was the number one most viewed person on Snapchat. But the social media mogul’s recent string of tweets, in addition to a recent Change.org petition urging Snapchat to reverse its redesign (a whopping 1.2 million people signed it), may just persuade Snap Inc. to start taking the concerns of the public (and the concerns of celebrities) seriously. Hopefully Instagram manages to stay on Jenner’s good side.
