When Lady Gaga said that her 2016 album Joanne would be her most personal to date, much of the singer’s vulnerability landed squarely on the record’s second single, “Million Reasons.” The heart-wrenching track premiered just a few weeks before the album’s release on October 21 and shocked fans, as Gaga hasn’t released many intimate ballads.
It feels as though Gaga has been just about everywhere to perform “Million Reasons,” including SNL, the AMAs, The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, and in the front seat of James Corden’s SUV for Carpool Karaoke. Now “Million Reasons” has a slick new music video to go with it, and we won’t lie—it’s a tearjerker.
The new video picks up where Gaga’s video for Joanne’s lead single “Perfect Illusion” left off, with the singer laying on the ground next to a highway in the desert.
“Million Reasons” opens with Gaga looking distraught on the ground before she is quickly picked up by her team in a group of black SUVs. Gaga is taken to a shoot, where she lip syncs to the song in her make up chair and on stage in a pink suit and matching pink fedora from the cover artwork of Joanne.
The video then flashes back to the desert, where a tearful Gaga is comforted by her friends. Once again in the make up chair, Gaga opens up a gift, which contains a rosary from her sister.
In an Instagram video for MTV, Gaga said, “With this music video I just really wanted to show people something that they never get to see, a more personal look into my life and establish a more human connection with my fans.”
Although it’s not explicitly stated in the video, an assumption can be made that “Million Reasons” depicts the heartbreak and support from friends and family following Gaga’s split from fiancé Taylor Kinney earlier this year. The two have publicly spoken highly of one another following the announcement they were ending their engagement, but let’s be real—break ups suck no matter what. At least now we have Gaga’s “Million Reasons” to listen to when we’re heartbroken.
Written with legendary Nashville writer Hillary Lindsey, the soaring ballad centers on Gaga mourning a relationship that she’s not yet fully ready to let go of, singing, “I’ve got a hundred million reasons to walk away / But baby I just need one good one to stay.”
The somber and impressive track is a stand out on an album that is filled with some of Gaga’s best work, which includes appearances from Mark Ronson, Florence Welch, Josh Homme, Father John Misty and Beck.
Lady Gaga is set to perform at the 2017 Super Bowl Halftime Show on February 5.
