When Lady Gaga told the NFL yesterday (watch here) that performing the Star Spangled Banner at today’s Super Bowl 50 was one of the biggest honours of her career, she wasn’t kidding. The New York native couldn’t have looked more patriotic unless she dressed up as a replica of the Statute of Liberty. Actually, we’re kinda surprised she didn’t.
The Grammy winner wore a red glitter suit complete with matching eye shadow and blue glitter nails.
The outfit was complete with American flag platform heels that would have caused most of us an embarrassing fall, but not Mother Monster. The shoes were custom Gucci, with the fashion house having a big Super Bowl weekend. In addition to creating Gaga’s national anthem look, the Italian company also designed the outfits in Beyoncé’s new Formation video, which dropped yesterday.
Gaga went full diva for the performance, not only with her glittery ensemble and blonde bouffant, but also with her impressive vocal runs. The entertainer kept her word and stayed true to the original recording of the national anthem, although we think it could have done with a few Gaga ‘rawr rawr rarararas’ here and there.
Of course, Gaga still slipped in some incredible diva moments. Like, when she took in the stadium and thought, meh, I’ve played bigger.
When she harnessed the power of the wind.
When she went full-Celine Dion and gave a chest bump.
Then when she blessed America, meaning we’ll have an early Spring.
