Lana Del Rey Stuns With First Live Performance Of ‘Love’

It’s been a couple of years since we’ve had new solo music from singer Lana Del Rey, but judging by the songstress’ new single “Love,” Del Rey has used her time off to find some happiness.

The singer performed her new single for the first time this past weekend at SXSW in Austin, where she gave a pitch-perfect performance, smiling at the crowd and looking more relaxed than she has on stage in years.

Performing at the Apple Music Showcase, Del Rey delighted fans with a 10-song set that in addition to “Love” included “Ultraviolence,” “Born To Die,” “Shades Of Cool,” “Video Games” and “Yayo.”

Straying from her usual melancholy subject matter, Del Rey explores the lighter side of life with “Love,” focusing on the euphoric feeling of being young and following your heart. Co-writing the new single with acclaimed songwriters Rick Nowels and Emile Haynie, “Love” is the first single off Del Rey’s upcoming fifth studio album.

Lana Del Rey’s fourth studio album “Honeymoon” was released in September 2015 and featured the singles “High by the Beach” and “Music to Watch Boys To.” Del Rey was largely absent from the music scene in 2016, with her only piece of new music including her second collaboration with The Weeknd on “Stargirl Interlude” off 2016’s Starboy.

Del Rey dropped an intergalactic themed music video for “Love” in February, kicking off her official return to the spotlight. Directed by Rich Lee, “Love” featured people and cars floating around the atmosphere and falling in love as Lana and her band play their new song on the moon. While the new video features Del Rey’s first foray into sci-fi, the singer’s love of grainy filters and bouffant hairstyle keeps the video from feeling totally foreign to the persona fans have come to expect.

“Love” is the lead single from Del Rey’s upcoming fifth studio album, which is set to be released in 2017.

Del Rey’s performance has been one of the many highlights from an impressive SXSW. Edgar Wright’s new film Baby Driver starring Ansel Elgort premiered to rave reviews, while a panel featuring the creators of Game of Thrones not only included the announcement of the Season 7 premiere date, but also revealed that singer Ed Sheeran would be appearing in the upcoming season.
