This week, Rita Ora stopped by The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon to talk red carpets, bathrobes, and hanging with Prince Harry. But she wasn’t there alone—later in the show, Ora and Liam Payne took the stage to perform “For You,” the lead single off the Fifty Shades Freed soundtrack.
Ora started off the performance on her own, with nothing but a projected backdrop of white roses to accompany her. Payne eventually joined in, causing the background to erupt into white flames and, later, transform into a perpetually swirling vortex. And both performers were able to show off their impressive pipes—who knew Payne had such a mean falsetto? Or that Ora was such a skilled live performer? We ranked “For You” pretty low on our list of Fifty Shades singles, but this performance genuinely makes us want to revaluate. The track was co-written by superstar composers Ali Payami (“Chained to the Rhythm), Ali Tamposi (“Wolves”) and Andrew Watt (who co-wrote Camila Cabello’s “Havana” and has actually been dating Ora for several months), so we might have been too quick to judge.
Fans have been focusing on Ora and Payne’s sultry almost-kiss near the end of the performance. Indeed, Ora and Payne’s fake chemistry was so convincing that Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon advised them to “make room for the holy ghost,” confirming the theory that Fallon has slowly but surely become everybody’s goofy dad. But their display was pretty PG—just a tad bit steamier than the show they put on for the “For You” music video and nowhere near as steamy as a performance associated with the Fifty Shades franchise could have been.
Fifty Shades mania has kicked into high gear over the past few days, as Fifty Shades Freed stars Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan recently stopped by The Tonight Show, The Graham Norton Show, Jimmy Kimmel Live, and Late Night with Seth Meyers to talk about filming awkward scenes and stalking the Stranger Things cast members at the Golden Globes.
Hailee Steinfeld also recently released the music video for her own Fifty Shades Freed single, “Capital Letters,” in which she runs down beaches, eats pasta, and admires beautiful views with a handsome mystery man. It’s no “For You,” but it’s certainly a sweet love song fit for the newly married Anastasia and Christian.
Fifty Shades Freed and the Fifty Shades Freed soundtrack both come out on February 9.
