Lindsay Lohan is a former teen queen, a beach-club entrepreneur, and Mykonos’ renowned party thrower. Now, she’s making a musical comeback. After teasing the track about a month ago, “Xanax” finally premiered yesterday, September 24, on her Instagram. It’s the first single she’s dropped since “Bossy,” which was released in 2008.
A lot has happened in the past 11 years, and we can’t all help but wonder: why now? And, why with a song called “Xanax”?
The song is inspired by her own personal life and toxic relationships, accompanied by a music video that’s a compilation of cherished moments of her loved ones and random highlights of her life.
“This video is a compilation of vignettes of life. Family, love, the process of moving forward and letting go of the past. To live and be happy, free of fear. Just to be grateful and open our eyes to our opportunities instead of numbing the mind,” Lohan captioned the video.
Though seemingly nonsensical to pair lyrics about social anxiety and clubbing, to wholesome videos of learning dance choreography and attending a charity event, the combination of the two illustrates a clear juxtaposition between pain and love, and her desire to move away from the toxicity of her past.
Now that Lohan broke her musical silence, can we expect more music from her soon? After all, our favourite Mean Girl signed a record deal with Tommy Mottola’s Casablanca Records back in June. One could only hope for another “Rumors“-esque banger, or a heart-wrenching punk anthem like “Confessions Of A Broken Heart (Daughter to Father).” We always love a good comeback story after all.
Since there’s no inkling of when new music will drop from the former Disney star, we’ll have to rely on reruns of Lindsay Lohan’s Beach Club in the meantime. You can catch all full episodes of Season 1 on MTV Canada.
