Macklemore has just won the award for grandson of the year. Possibly the decade. In the new music video for his single “Glorious” featuring Skylar Grey, the rapper surprises his grandma Helen on her 100th birthday. Announcing that the day will be spent doing whatever she wants, Macklemore and Helen stay busy, hitting up an arcade, zooming through the grocery store and visiting a thrift shop. Things even get a little risqué with a trip to a karaoke bar, a tattoo parlour, and a visit from a stripper while Helen is celebrating with her girlfriends. YOLO, amirite?
The video ends with Macklemore, real name Ben Haggerty, and his grandmother taking a spin in his convertible before enjoying the sunset over a lake. For anyone missing their grandparents, we suggest having some tissues ready before hitting ‘play’ on “Glorious.” There are a lot of feels.
“Glorious” was directed by Jason Koenig, who has previously worked with Macklemore on his videos for “Can’t Hold Us,” “Otherside,” “Fake Empire” and “My Oh My” with Ryan Lewis. Koenig’s most recent video was Ed Sheeran’s “Shape Of You,” with featured a cameo from Macklemore and starred Jennie Pegouskie, a back up dancer for Macklemore.
Macklemore’s latest video isn’t the first time the Seattle rapper has made his work a family affair. The musician’s daughter and wife are also featured in the music video for “Brad Pitt’s Cousin.”
“Glorious” acts as the lead single from Macklemore’s upcoming solo album, the first the rapper has released without his producing partner Ryan Lewis since 2005’s The Language Of My World. As for Lewis, he’s keeping busy as well, earning a writing credit on Kesha’s comeback single “Praying,” which was also released today (watch the video here).
