We all know the story about that Cinderella chick who went from rags to riches in a matter of days. Who we don’t know about is Maggie Rogers, a cool young adult actually from this generation with a similar fairytale storyline.
Earlier in March, Pharrell Williams (the fairy godmother of this story) hosted a masterclass for music students at the Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts. Pharrell met and thoroughly critiqued every student in the masterclass. Every student except for one.
Introducing Maggie Rogers, a regular post-secondary student who’s just trying to figure out who she is. Growing up on the east side of Maryland as a banjo player, Rogers describes herself as an outdoorsy girl with a love for folk music. Somewhere during her time at NYU, Rogers stopped making music. It wasn’t until a studying abroad in France and experiencing the country’s foreign dance music that Rogers rediscovered her musical passion and found herself in Pharrell’s masterclass.
After introducing herself and talking about her love for music, Rogers jumped straight into showing the musical genius of her latest project, “Alaska.” As soon as the introductory banjo sounds of “Alaska” began, Pharrell couldn’t help but turn his neutral expression into one of pure awe. Rogers took little notice, continuing to bob her head to the music. When the piece ended, Pharrell had only praise for it.
Thanks to Pharrell’s shocked expression and the Internet, Rogers has gone viral. Millions of people now consider themselves fans of the small town girl with a goal of combining the natural sounds of folk music and the uptempo energy of dance music.
With a newly solidified relationship with Mick Management, Rogers has announced an upcoming EP and an accompanying music video for “Alaska.”
If Pharrell is Rogers’ fairy godmother, then the Internet is this new artist’s prince. Check out the full video of Pharrell’s masterclass below, and jump to the 18-minute mark to see the magical moment when he meets Maggie Rogers.
