The xx are continuing their exploration into the American teenager experience. In January, the trio of Jamie Smith, Romy Madley Croft and Oliver Sim released their sophomore album I See You, traveling to the small art town of Marfa, Texas to shoot a video about local teens for the lead single “On Hold.”
Now the band has set their sights on Hollywood, enlisting some of the most exciting rising stars in Tinseltown. Released this week, The xx’s third single “I Dare You” stars Stranger Things actor Millie Bobby Brown as a young school girl who misses her bus and decides to tag along for a day of hooky with her older sister and her friends. These famous friends include model Paris Jackson, daughter of the late King of Pop, and Moonlight star Ashton Sanders.
The four teens and one pre-teen drive the streets of L.A. until they end up at a reportedly haunted house where they find The xx providing the perfect backing track for an old fashioned slow dance. Brown’s character is left in tears, though it’s unclear whether the source of her emotional distress is from unrequited love from one of the boys or Jackson’s character. Either way, being a teen can be amazing and awful all at once.
The new video was directed by Alasdair McLellan, who was behind the camera for The xx’s “On Hold” and “Say Something Loving,” which brought the trio back to their hometown of Brixton in the UK.
This week’s video had McLellan and The xx teaming up with Calvin Klein’s Chief Creative Officer Raf Simons, which may explain why the new video looks as stylistic and slick as a Tom Ford film.
