Missy Elliott is either gearing up to release her first album since 2005’s incredible The Cookbook or she’s just toying with us. We hope it’s the former.
The groundbreaking rapper made her triumphant return to the stage during last year’s Super Bowl performance, appearing alongside headliner Katy Perry. Elliott followed up the performance later in 2015 with a new single WTF (Where They From) with Pharrell, complete with a marionette-friendly video that show also shows the entertainer doing what she does best – releasing game-changing music videos.
Now Missy has released her second single in four months with Pep Rally, the sports-friendly track that debuted during tonight’s Super Bowl. The song first appeared in an Amazon Echo ad that played during the Super Bowl and featured Missy alongside Alec Baldwin, Jason Schwartzman and Dan Marino. Yup, definitely a group of people we think hang out together.
The entire track dropped following tonight’s game, giving fans the chance to fully enjoy the sports-centric jam, which includes lyrics like “You play the point guard/Hitting three corners man, playing real hard” and “Football player running yard, got skills/At the ball game, pep rally over here”. If there’s another remake of Friday Night Lights in the works we think we have your theme song.
So, can we finally start hoping for a new Missy Elliott album in 2016?
