One Direction may be over for the indefinite future, but one person who definitely isn’t about to abandon the boy band’s millions of fans is Niall Horan.
The former 1D member just released his first solo single “This Town,” and has all the guitar chords, emotion and love it takes to make a One Direction hit.
Horan is at his heartbreak best, reminiscing about a girl he’s loved since childhood and watching her fall for someone else. It’s the exact subject matter that helped One Direction become one of the biggest bands of all time and will likely be met with open arms and wallets from Directioners still reeling over the band’s split.
In addition to surprising fans with the new song, Horan also uploaded a black and white video (because, *emotions*)—performing solo with an acoustic guitar at Studio A in Hollywood, California.
Working with producer Greg Kurstin (Tegan and Sara, Adele, Sia), Horan co-wrote “This Town” with One Direction songwriters Jamie Scott, Mike Needle and Daniel Bryer. While no plans for a full album have been revealed, Horan did announce that he’s signed a record deal with Capitol Records, which hopefully means more music is not far behind.
Unlike Horan’s former One Direction band mate Zayn Malik, whose debut solo album Mind of Mine marks a stark departure in sound and lyrical content from the boy band, Horan is sticking to what he knows in “This Town.”
Sure, the new song sounds just like an unreleased One Direction single, but that’s okay. We still love 1D.
