Nicki Minaj Makes Her Triumphant Return With ‘Chun Li’ And ‘Barbie Tingz’

Her new album has been one of the most highly anticipated returns to music in years and the wait is close to being over. After announcing earlier this week that she would be dropping her single “Chun Li” on Thursday, Nicki Minaj sent millions of Barbz into a frenzy, with #NickiDay trending on Twitter today.

It’s been four years since Minaj dropped her third studio album The Pinkprint, with the Grammy-nominated record including the singles “Anaconda,” “The Night Is Still Young,” “Only,” “Truffle Butter,” and more. Since releasing The Pinkprint, Minaj has popped up on a number of tracks, working with DNCE, Katy Perry, Jason Derulo, Nick Jonas, David Guetta, Ariana Grande, and Migos, even reuniting with her Young Money crew Drake and Lil Wayne for “No Frauds.”

But we still wanted a full album.

Thankfully, it’s on the way. Speaking with Beats 1 host Zane Lowe, Minaj talked about why she disconnected from social media over the past year.

“Because I needed to focus on my album. This is the best album in my life that I’ve ever created,” said Minaj. “I need to focus and I wanted to make sure I was writing something that was meaningful to me and that would inspired and captivate my audience.”

Minaj went full Ed Sheeran and deleted every contact in her phone. “I wasn’t only not posting, but I took all forms of social media off my phone and it was one of the most genius decisions I ever made for myself as a human. It gave me peace,” said Minaj, who wanted to deactivate from the matrix.

Minaj revealed that the beef between Drake and her ex-boyfriend Meek Mills, as well as Mills’ court battle and incarceration, took her attention away from music. The rapper has seriously been working on the album since December 2017, but did say that she wrote some of the songs for the upcoming record years ago.

Minaj wouldn’t say who will be featured on the album, but did say that a documentary on the making of her new album will be arriving in the near future. She also admitted that her initial plan was to drop the album all at once, but after taking meetings with executives she decided to give her fans two new songs.

Debuting “Chun Li” first, Minaj said the song was finished hours ago. “I had worked all day, I hadn’t slept for days, and this was only two days ago,” said Nicki. “I went in the booth, I did all of the melodies that you hear right now on “Chun Li,” I did that in five minutes,” said Nicki. “Literally the song was done yesterday.”

Minaj also dropped the track “Barbie Tingz,” with the rapper shouting out her Young Money crew of Drake and Lil Wayne, with boss Weezy calling into Beats 1 to congratulate Minaj on her new singles.

Prepare for 2018 to be the year of Nicki Minaj.
