We don’t usually think of death as a way to improve one’s looks, but for Queen Nicki Minaj, her time spent with the undead looks like a weekend at a spa. Getting the ultimate mud mask, Nicki Minaj’s new video for “Ganja Burn” shows the rapper emerging from a deep undead slumber in the middle of the desert to exact revenge on her enemies. At least, that’s what it’s supposed to look like. Really she just dances in the sand in progressively better outfits.
Starting with a full minute of backstory, the video for “Ganja Burn” is supposed to tell the story of a Queen who lets her enemies kill her people, only to later rise from the dead with her army to exact her revenge (why not just fight back from the start?). It’s a pretty exciting lead up that falls short of expectations, with Minaj striking her best queen poses in barely-there rags, barely-there jewels and barely-there armour. Oh yeah, and she has an army of five men.
We would be much more entertained by Minaj’s new video, which brings the cover art for her Queen album to life, if there weren’t such high expectations set by her intro. It’s like we thought we were going to watch a new episode of Game of Thrones and instead just got the first five minutes. Still cool and has partial nudity, but missing a lot of action.
One place Nicki Minaj never falls short is with her live performances, especially at the MTV VMA. Don’t miss Nicki Minaj perform along with Shawn Mendes, Ariana Grande, Logic and Ryan Tedder, Panic! At The Disco, Travis Scott and Post Malone. Watch the 2018 MTV VMA on Monday, August 20 at 9E/6P on Much and MTV Canada.
