For those of us Pretty Little Liars fans that still have a gaping hole in our hearts (and Tuesday night schedules) for the deliciously dramatic series, a new show is on its way to give us the shot of intrigue, murder mystery, and really good looking people that we need in our lives each week. Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists, the new spin-off of Pretty Little Liars, has been officially green lit for a full season and celebrated by debuting its first trailer. Of course, we picked it apart like Spencer examining a deadly board game.
The new series stars PLL regulars Sasha Pieterse and Janel Parrish, who are both reprising their roles as Alison DiLaurentis and Mona Vanderwaal. The series open with Alison moving to the picturesque town of Beacon Heights to work as a professor and becoming forced friends with her former enemy Mona, who is the only person she knows in the new setting. The pair are thrown together when a murder occurs in the small town, with the new cast of over-achieving college students struggling to cover up lies and produce alibis.
Pieterse and Parrish are joined by Disney star Sofia Carson, Sydney Park, Eli Brown, Graeme Thomas King, Hayley Erin, and Kelly Rutherford, who is best known for her role as Lily van der Woodsen on Gossip Girl. Judging by the first trailer, there are many similarities to the original PLL.
There’s a terrifying basement, which may or may not still hold the PLL moms captive.
There’s people walking around with excessively large knives.
There’s shots of Mona looking like she’s holding everyone’s secrets, but we can’t tell whether or not to trust her.
There’s Alison spying/looking terrified.
There’s more real estate porn.
There are students dressed much nicer than you’d ever see students dressed in high school/college.
And of course, someone is going to be murdered.
The new series will stay in the PLL world beyond casting Pieterse and Parrish, with PLL showrunner I. Marlene King acting as executive producer and author Sara Shephard, who wrote the PLL book series, lending her book The Perfectionists to the new TV series. This is the second time a PLL spin off has been launched, with Ravenswood being cancelled after only one season.
Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists is set to debut in 2019.
