Brothers Theron and Timothy Thomas are the duo behind R City, who you may know better as the guys singing with Maroon 5’s Adam Levine on that song you can’t get out of your head. Our Much cameras caught up with the brothers, also known as Rock City, to find out how they ended up with one of the biggest songs of the fall.
Originally from the Virgin Islands, the brothers started out as artists, but in an effort to make it in the US, broadened their spectrum of talents. “When we moved to the States, chasing our dream, struggling and trying to make it, fortunately songwriting for other artists landed in our lap and we had the opportunity to write a song for Akon,” says Thomas. “That opened the door for us to write songs for other artists.”
The brother’s boast an impressive list of artists they’ve written for, including Rihanna, Ciara and Sean Kingston. “The difference between the songs we write for others and the songs we write for ourselves in basically that we’re telling their story versus us telling our story,” explains Theron.
After years spent working as songwriters in the U.S., R City were able to get back on the mics and write for themselves. Thanks to a connection through pop producer Dr. Luke, R City scored a meeting with Maroon 5 front man Adam Levine and convinced him to record their single Locked Away. “Being artists was always our dream,” says Thomas, “and here we are right now doing what we love.”
