Rebel Wilson And Liam Hemsworth’s ‘Isn’t It Romantic’ Looks Brilliant

Rebel Wilson, Luke Hemsworth

Fans of the romantic comedy movie genre know that even though the subject matter has been done to death on the big screen, there’s always room for more movies with happy endings. We blame Disney setting unrealistic expectations from a young age. In Rebel Wilson and Liam Hemsworth’s new film Isn’t It Romantic?, the rom com genre is hilariously put on blast, with every predictable storyline and troupe examined in hilarious detail.

In the new film, Wilson plays a woman named Natalie who often voices her disdain for rom coms. When a freak accident lands her in the hospital, Natalie wakes up to find herself under the care of a very handsome doctor in a picturesque private room. Oh yeah, she’s living in a rom com.

Where the 2014 Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler satire They Came Together tried and surprisingly failed to find the funny in rom com, the first trailer for Isn’t It Romantic? gives us hope that Wilson and Hemsworth can deliver their own Scary Movie for the genre.

The cast is rounded out by Adam Devine, Priyanka Chopra, and Betty Gilpin, with an impressive list of romantic comedies already stacking up the five leads’ IMDB pages.

So how well does the trailer for Isn’t It Romantic? nail the rom com genre?

There’s the flashback to the origin story, with Wilson’s Natalie being told by her mother at a young age that she’s no Julia Roberts and therefore will never find romantic love.

Rom Com Affiliation: Trainwreck, Bride Wars

Rom coms love making traumatic brain injuries look romantic, with Natalie suffering a head injury and waking up under a spell that has turned her life into a PG-13 romantic comedy.

Rom Com Affiliation: I Feel Pretty, While You Were Sleeping, 50 First Dates, Shallow Hal

The film is obviously set in New York City and obviously Wilson’s Natalie has a huge closet with tons of clothes, and a job with an obviously stunning office.

Rom Com Affiliation: Sex and the City, 27 Dresses, The Intern, How To Be Single

A rom com wouldn’t be complete without a musical number, and in this case that means a flash mob in Central Park and a number of ‘spontaneous’ choreographed dance routines.

Rom Com Affiliation: Friends With Benefits, 500 Days of Summer

The casting for the film has rom com notes, with Pitch Perfect stars Wilson and Devine together again on screen for the third time. Could they be the next Hanks and Ryan, Barrymore and Sandler, Stone and Gosling? Yes, but with more singing and Australian accents.

Rom Com Affiliation: Crazy Stupid Love, The Wedding Singer, You’ve Got Mail

Natalie has a gay best friend, who she hilariously and accurately describes as someone setting gay rights back 100 years.

Rom Com Affiliation: Clueless, Set It Off, Easy A, The Object of My Affection, Mean Girls, My Best Friend’s Wedding

Then there’s also the lack of diversity in the casting, with Priyanka Chopra as the only non-white lead.

Rom Affiliation: Literally every romantic comedy ever made.

Isn’t It Romantic opens in theatres on Valentine’s Day, perfect for people who both love and hate the romantic holiday.
