The Trailer For Rihanna And Donald Glover’s ‘Guava Island’ Movie Is Here

Rihanna, Donald Glover

Back in August, Childish Gambino fan page Childish News shared a picture of rapper and actor Childish Gambino aka Donald Glover alongside singer, actor and fashion designer Rihanna. It appeared as though the two hugely talented, heavily hyphenated stars were filming a movie together, although not many details were known aside from the name (Guava Island), the setting (Cuba) and the director (Glover’s frequent collaborator Hiro Murai). This past weekend, fans got a more in-depth look at the project—and it’s officially time to get excited.

In addition to Glover and Rihanna, the film also stars Black Panther breakout actor Letitia Wright and Game of Thrones’ Nonso Anozie. Glover appears to play a struggling musician who lives with his girlfriend, played by Rihanna. Frustrated with the constant struggle to make ends meet, Glover’s character decides to take the day off and enjoy the island city he lives in.

The first trailer for Guava Island was revealed during Childish Gambino’s PHAROS festival in New Zealand over the weekend. In its second year, the festival received mixed reviews from concert goers for what many described as a logistical nightmare, with the rapper constructing a dome to house the expansive show. It may not have been the ideal concert experience, but the festival did appear to be an adequate venue for debuting the trailer.

The trailer doesn’t confirm Guava Island as the name of the film but does refer to the movie as a Childish Gambino project. Director Hiro Murai has earned three Emmy nominations for his work on Glover’s Atlanta, with the pair again making headlines this year for their stunning social commentary in the music video for “This Is America.”
