Weekend one of the most celebrity-filled music festival of the year has come and gone, leaving a sea of flower crowns strewn about the grounds of Palm Spring’s Coachella Music Festival. The squads rolled deep, the outfits were taken straight from the 1970s, and the parties looked like product placement dreams.
Of course, there were also musical performances going on and they included some big name performers with big name guest appearances. Let’s break down weekend one of Coachella 2016.
Ending the first weekend of Coachella with a bang was Bad Gal Riri and her performance of We Found Love during Calvin Harris’ closing set. The Barbados singer had been spotted at the festival throughout the weekend, including hanging out with rumoured former fling Leonardo DiCaprio. Still, the singer’s appearance on stage was an exciting surprise for concert goers, but we have a feeling the person who shot this video had the inside scoop on Harris’ set.
Kesha may still be swimming in legal battles with her former producer and alleged assaulter Dr. Luke, but thankfully the singer got the chance to return to the stage this weekend. During Zedd’s set on Saturday night, the heavily rumoured return of Kesha to her first large-scale performance since the beginning of her legal filings against Luke took place to an ecstatic crowd. The duo performed Zedd’s track True Colours together, an appropriate song for Kesha’s current legal situation, with powerful lyrics like “What we thought we knew, has been swallowed by the truth / It’s time to light the flame, right before it rains” showing off Kesha’s incredible voice. Slay, Kesha.
Lorde and Sam Smith
English duo Disclosure featured singers Sam Smith and Lorde on their two biggest singles from 2015’s Caracal, including Omen and Magnets, so it only made sense to invite both singers on stage for the brothers’ Coachella set on Saturday. Not stopping there, Disclosure’s high energy set also included Aluna Francis of AlunaGeorge, Kwabs, Brendan Reily and Lion Babe.
Another short video of Disclosure with Lorde tonight at Coachella singing Magnets.

Artist Kanye West took time out of his busy schedule of uploading, then pulling, then uploading The Life of Pablo to perform with A$AP Rocky on Friday. Unfortunately, West’s mic wasn’t working for his entire performance of Father Stretch My Hands Pt.1. We can be hard on Kanye sometimes, but that kind of issue is definitely worth ranting about.
Fresh off her performance of Castle at the MTV Movie Awards, Hasley got to live out a childhood dream by performing I Write Sins Not Tragedies with Panic! at the Disco frontman Brandon Urie during her Coachella set on Saturday. Said Halsey, “When I was young there was one band that changed my fucking life!” We’re assuming she means Panic! at the Disco.
Snoop Dogg, Common, NWA
In his continued efforts to reunite NWA, Ice Cube used his Coachella set to get the band back together, minus Dr. Dre. O’Shea Jackson Jr., Common, and Snoop Dogg all joined the reunion, which featured MC Ren and DJ Yella.
The Vermont Senator and Democratic presidential hopeful has met with fellow New Yorker MC Killer Mic a number of times in the past year to discuss issues with the black community in the US. So, it only seemed fitting that during their Coachella set this weekend, Run The Jewels would enlist the help of Bernie Sanders to introduce the duo. To recap this past week alone, Sanders campaigned in his home state of New York, held a debate with former Secretary Hillary Clinton, and flew to Rome to meet with the Pope. AND recorded an intro for Run the Jewels. Coachella is feeling the Bern.
