Shawn Mendes isn’t the only Canadian musician to find international success thanks to Vine. Fellow social media star Ruth B landed a record deal last year thanks to her popular music vines and has now dropped her debut music video with the emotional and dreamy “Lost Boy.”
The 20-year-old singer sits at a piano at the beginning of the video in a brick-walled apartment. Books, umbrellas and her lyrics written on sheets of paper hang suspended in air, eventually crashing to the ground. Ruth’s piano is engulfed in grass as if it has sprouted from the ground of Neverland, with the somber track referencing Peter Pan and his nemesis, Captain Hook. The stunning singer walks through the apartment and stands in front of a blue backdrop and snow softly falls, adding to the cinematic aura of the song.
The visuals were a collaboration between Ruth B and director Emil Nava, who is best known for his work with fellow singer/songwriter Ed Sheeran (“Thinking Out Loud”, “Give Me Love”) and Calvin Harris (“How Deep Is Your Love”, “Summer”).
Inspired by the TV series Once Upon A Time, Ruth wrote, recorded and released the song in January 2015 in short installments on her Vine page. The hauntingly beautiful and sad ballad took off, landing the Alberta native enough exposure to secure a record deal and to record her first EP The Intro, released last November.
