British singer Sampha continues to make a name for himself on this side of the pond thanks to his hauntingly beautiful melodic singles. The singer, songwriter and producer dropped his debut album Process in February, and has amassed a laundry list of favourable reviews, with the singer currently on tour as opener for labelmates The xx.
If listeners aren’t yet familiar with Sampha’s stunning solo work, there’s a good chance they may recognize his smooth vocals from his list of collaborations—which, most recently includes Canada’s own Drake. Sampha’s relationship with Drizzy goes back to 2013, when he sampled the singer on his singles “Too Much” and “The Motion” from Nothing Was The Same. Sampha also appears on Drake’s latest release, with the rapper including Sampha on the track “4422” from his More Life playlist.
Now Sampha has given Drake the cover treatment, taking on his 2016 hit “Controlla” off Views. Recorded at the BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge, Sampha’s beautiful cover of “Controlla” makes him the latest artist to take on the 6ix God.
Sampha’s other recent collabs include hitting the studio with Kanye West for 2016’s The Life of Pablo and appearing on Solange’s single “Don’t Touch My Hair” from A Seat At The Table.
While recently in his home country, Sampha also delivered a soulful performance of his own “(No One Knows Me) Like the Piano,” which is the lead single off Process.
If you’re not listening to Sampha yet, one listen to any of these songs will quickly make you a fan.
