Everything Selena Gomez Has Been Up To In The Past Year

Selenators can finally rejoice! Selena Gomez is returning to music and we can’t contain our excitement. After hinting at the release of new tunes on Instagram, the 27-year-old singer posted earlier this week, announcing a drop date: “I needed to lose you to love me. 10.23.”

Back in June, Gomez appeared on the Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. She started off her appearance by participating in the Hot Ones challenge, where Fallon and his guest eat spicy wings that get progressively hotter. Following the challenge, Gomez talked about her plans to release a new album. “It took me four years now to even feel at a good place with this album,” she told Jimmy Fallon.

This comes as no surprise. Last year, the singer retreated from the spotlight and announced on social media that she needed to take a break for her mental health. After seeking treatment for her anxiety and depression, the singer has slowly returned to the scene and gradually took on new projects. Here’s a recap of what she’s been up to this year.

New Puma Collection

Gomez has been a celebrity brand ambassador for Puma since 2017. After a four-month break, Gomez returned to Instagram by announcing her continued collaboration with the German sportswear brand.

J Balvin Collaboration

Selena paid homage to her Latino roots when she featured on the Benny Blanco-produced J Balvin track “I Can’t Get Enough” in March. She also appeared in the track’s music video.

WE Day 2019

In April, Gomez appeared on her first red carpet of the year for WE Day in California. She turned heads wearing a navy plunge neck Dior dress, complete with purple cat-eye makeup and hair in a low bun. Speaking at the event, Gomez called WE Day “the best day of the year,” and congratulated attendants on their acts of community service that earned them theirs spots at the event.

Surprise Coachella Performance

Her first performance in 2019 was a memorable one. Gomez took the stage at Coachella with DJ Snake, Ozuna, and Cardi B performing the hit song “Taki Taki.” The surprise performance not only marked her first performance of the year, but also her first time performing at Coachella.

Empowerment In Entertainment Event

Gomez joined Oprah Winfrey at her second red carpet of the year at The Hollywood Reporter’s Empowerment in Entertainment event where she presented at the ceremony. She awarded young students with scholarships as part of the Young Executive Fellowship Program, which was created to directly address the lack of diversity among Hollywood executives.

Yesterday at the @hollywoodreporter Empowerment in Entertainment event, I had the honor to meet some of the brightest students who might never have imagined a career in Hollywood as they were given the opportunity to go to college and work with mentors in the industry. Thank you to the most courageous, brave, intellectual, strong, beautiful spirit that is Oprah for caring so much about empowering all walks of life but more importantly for being the action and not just standing behind the word. You DO it. Thank you for continually inspiring us to be kinder, greater and stretching all the boundaries for the better. “From everyone to whom much has been given, much will be required.”

Cannes Film Festival

The year brought many firsts for Gomez, including her first time at the Cannes Film Festival. She attended in promotion for her new movie, The Dead Don’t Die.

Living Undocumented

Gomez has been the executive producer on a new six-part documentary series, titled
Living Undocumented. She wanted to use her platform “to be a voice for people who are too afraid to speak,” she wrote in an essay for Time Magazine. Gomez also acted as executive producer on all three seasons of the series 13 Reasons Why, with its fourth season set to premiere sometime in 2020.
