Selena Gomez‘s latest music video for Hands To Myself was released in December, but we didn’t really know much about it until now. The singer has just released a behind-the-scenes look describing the process of making this video and she explains her artistic decisions for the video’s story line.
“It is probably top three, maybe number one favorite on the album because it’s one of those hidden gem songs,” expresses Gomez in the video. “It’s very beautiful and special and it’s got this funk to it that really created this whole sound that could knock me into the future of my music. So it’s exciting to see it come to life.”
From watching this clip, we learned that this video was directed by Alek Keshishian, who’s a “dear family friend” and also the director of Madonna: Truth or Dare.
Keshishian is the person who brought Selena’s vision to life. In the behind the scenes video, she says that the story is about having two different moments in a fantasy. “I think everybody can have those moments where they’re dreaming about what their life could be, especially girls with love,” she says, expanding on what she meant by the split fantasy.
The premise of the video is that there’s a young woman, creeping into a grand LA home. Initially, the viewer is left wondering if it’s her home or if she’s breaking into someone else’s home. With this air of mystery, we start seeing footage of Selena wandering though the house, contrasted by footage of her spending time with a model-esque man. This plays up on her vision of the different moments of fantasy. She says wants to leave viewers guessing what’s reality.
“You get to see these images of what people think love is and it’s theatrical, it’s movie-like,” the singer explains, “All of that you end up seeing ends up being this false reality on both ends.”
Finally, Selena Gomez concludes with the big reveal – the main character in the video actually broke into an “actor-type/idol’s” house because she’s a deranged fan and that’s the version of the character who’s supposed to be the reality. She explains that it’s a character who’s obsessed with the idea of love and can’t control themselves.
