It’s been a minute since we heard new music from Selena Gomez, but after a week of social media teases, Gomez and Norwegian DJ/producer Kygo have dropped their new single “It Ain’t Me.”
The EDM track combines a number of textures, with “It Ain’t Me” working as a soaring stadium track, while still boasting soft moments of quietness. It’s a little bit country, a little bit rock and roll.
Lyrically, the song opens itself up to speculation that Gomez is singing about ex-boyfriend Justin Bieber. “It Ain’t Me” is about someone ending their relationship because of their partner’s partying and excessive drinking. Sings Gomez, “Somewhere along the lines / We stopped seeing eye to eye / You were staying out all night / And I had enough” and “I had a dream / We were back to seventeen.” The pair began dating when Bieber was 16 and Gomez was 18.
If the song is directed at Bieber, it’s the second possible diss track in two days, with Gomez’s new boyfriend The Weeknd reportedly dropping his own anti-Bieber single “Some Way” with fellow Toronto artist Nav earlier this week.
The new track is Gomez’s first since releasing her 2015 album Revival, which featured the singles “Hands To Myself,” “Kill ‘Em With Kindness,” “Same Old Love,” “Me & The Rhythm” and “Good For You.”
Gomez cut her 2016 Revival World Tour short to seek treatment for depression related to her lupus illness, eventually returning to the public eye in November to deliver an inspiring and raw speech at the American Music Awards.
In addition to dropping her first single of 2017, Gomez has been busy this week attending New York Fashion Week. The new face of Coach was front and centre at the Coach Fall 2017 show, seated next to Vogue Editor Anna Wintour. Let’s hope Gomez is toting some lyrics in her purse for a new 2017 album.
