Selena Gomez Got Candid About Her Career At The Met Gala

Humans of New York is the beloved photoblog turned Instagram account and coffee table book by photographer Brandon Stanton. Thanks to the huge popularity of the account, which features candid shots and stories of people Stanton meets on the streets of New York, the photographer has managed to gain access to some of the biggest names in the world, like former President Barack Obama and Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.

This week, Stanton returned to where it all began, hitting the streets of New York to interview locals. Well, maybe not the streets and not exactly locals. Stanton again snagged a highly coveted ticket to the annual Met Gala, where he interviewed some of the biggest names in entertainment.

Gaining access to the Met Gala meant gaining access to its guests, with a number of high profile attendees more than willing to pose for a picture and share a personal story. One of, if not the biggest names Stanton can now add to his interview list is the queen of Instagram herself, Selena Gomez.

Posing solo without new boyfriend and Met Gala date The Weeknd, Gomez talked to HONY about her career, saying she feels like she’s “just starting.” The singer went on to say that if her career disappeared tomorrow, she feels like she would be okay. “I get that from my mother. From the moment I started singing, she always reminded me that all of this was a privilege, and could be taken at any moment. So singing is not how I define myself. I try to keep my identity rooted in my friendships and my faith.”

HONY’s seven million Instagram followers are glued to the account every week because of the photographers’ innate ability to make his subjects feel comfortable in opening up. Giving possibly his most candid interview ever, Ryan Reynolds posed at the Met Gala with wife Blake Lively, praising his partner’s empathy.

“She always responds with empathy. She meets anger with empathy. She meets hate with empathy,” said Reynolds. “She’ll take the time to imagine what happened to a person when they were five or six years old. And she’s made me a more empathetic person. I had a very fractured relationship with my father. Before he died, she made me remember things I didn’t want to remember. She made me remember the good times.”

The special Met Gala edition of HONY also included images of Stephen Colbert with wife Evelyn McGee-Colbert, and married couple and actors Claire Danes and Hugh Dancy.

Just weeks after announcing her pregnancy, Serena Williams attended the Met Gala with her fiancé Alexis Ohanian. The Reddit co-founder praised his wife-to-be, saying, “She has the biggest heart. Everyone sees her success as an athlete, but all of that is layered on the size of her heart. She gives 100% of herself to everything she does: as a friend, as a lover, and soon, as a mother.”

Over the years, Stanton has expanded his coverage beyond New York, traveling to Syria and Colombia to interview people from different parts of the world and share their stories. The Instagram account has resulted in huge fundraising efforts for a number of the people featured in Stanton’s images, with the comments section often turning into a place to find comfort and solace, joy, and laughter.
