In 2017, couples can be photographed together, living together, even married, but unless there’s proof of the relationship on social media, it’s not truly official.
Going by this rule, The Weeknd and Selena Gomez are now officially a couple. Seleeknd? Welena? We’ll keep working on this.
After months of paparazzi shots showing the two together, including a recent trip to The Weeknd’s hometown of Toronto, the new couple have posted their first official picture together to social media.
Sharing with his 11.5 million Instagram followers, which seems impressive until you note that Gomez boasts 116 million followers, The Weeknd posted a dark close-up pic of the couple over the weekend.
Keeping it simple with no caption or tags, the picture shows Gomez planting a kiss on boyfriend The Weeknd, real name Abel Tesfaye. All together now, “awwwwwwww!”
Now that the couple have declared their love on social media, what can we expect next? Here are a few ideas.
Music Video Collaborations
The Weeknd previously cast former girlfriend Bella Hadid in his music video for “In The Night,” but will he and Gomez follow suit? Even though their relationships lasted years, Justin Bieber and Gomez never appeared in one another’s music video. Gomez said recently that she doesn’t plan on speaking publicly about her romantic life, but what about lip syncing in a video next to her significant other?
Okay, so Gomez may not be interested in speaking about her relationships, but what about singing about them? The singer got personal with her emotionally raw and stunning 2014 track “The Heart Wants What It Wants” about her breakup with Bieber. Let’s hope if Gomez or The Weeknd decide to sing about their love, it’s happier subject matter.
Now that Gomez and The Weeknd have gone public on the internet, will they go public at events IRL? Celebrity couples run the gamut from gushing about their partner at every opportunity, to hiding marriages. Former couple Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin had a rule to never walk a red carpet together, while private couple Jay Z and Beyoncé do appear together at events, though they rarely give red carpet interviews. We could see Gomez and The Weeknd leaning towards the latter.
Both The Weeknd and Gomez are fans of musical collaborations. The Weeknd has hit the studio with Drake, Lana Del Rey, Future, Kendrick Lamar and Belly just to name a few. He’s even ventured into Gomez’s pop world before, earning one of his first big singles with Ariana Grande on the track “Love Me Harder.” As for Gomez, her most recently released single and so far only new piece of music in 2017 was courtesy of a Kygo collabo on “It Ain’t Me.” Could the new couple release sweet music together? We would love to hear that.
