It’s no secret that Shawn Mendes is as big a fan of Ed Sheeran—just like the rest of us. When he was first starting out as a Vine star, Mendes built his following thanks to beautiful and inventive covers of artists like Justin Bieber, One Republic, The Neighborhood, Lana Del Rey and more, but the artist that seemed to inspire the teen singer the most was Ed Sheeran.
Check out bebe Mendes taking on Sheeran’s “Give Me Love” below. Awwwww!
Even after establishing himself as a solo artist with his debut album Handwritten, Mendes continued to show love for Sheeran, speaking about the British singer’s impact on his style in interviews and covering the “Shape Of You” singer in concert and at radio events.
Now Mendes is again proving that he’s Team Ed, this time making his cover of Sheeran more unique than we’ve heard in the past.
During his performance at Capital’s Summertime Ball in London’s Wembley Stadium earlier this summer, Mendes had a break from his guitar and took at seat at the piano to perform the most beautiful rendition we’ve heard of Sheeran’s 2017 single “Castle On The Hill.”
Changing the tempo and the emotion behind the energized track, Mendes completely re-imagines the tune and fits the sombre feel of the nostalgic lyrics perfectly. The cover only includes the first half of the song, with Mendes eventually returning to his trusty guitar and launching into “Treat You Better,” but we’re still hoping he’ll release a full cover version of the track. Like, damn Shawn. That was a lot of feels for a minute and a half.
BTW, when are these two going to work together already?
Here’s a quick reminder of what “Castle On The Hill” normally sounds like in case you missed it.
Mendes has already had the opportunity to share the stage with one of his idols thanks to John Mayer inviting Mendes on stage during his recent show in the Toronto singer’s hometown in April.
The pair performed a mash up of their songs, including Mendes’ single “Mercy” and Mayer’s “In Your Atmosphere” from 2007’s Where the Light Is: John Mayer Live In Los Angeles.
