Shawn Mendes has no issue giving his music away for free. The Canadian pop singer is only three days away from the highly anticipated release of his third solo album and has just dropped the fifth new track from his self-titled record with “Nervous.”
In “Nervous,” Mendes has found his most radio-friendly release thus far in his new album cycle, with the up-tempo track about jitters from a new crush reminiscent of Selena Gomez’s “Bad Liar.” The musical connection could be thanks to singer and songwriter Julia Michaels, who wrote Gomez’s cheeky 2017 single and appears on Mendes’ upcoming album.
Sure to please Mendes’ younger audience, “Nervous” is a throwback to Mendes’ earlier work, standing out from the more mature and personal singles he’s released in the past weeks.
Following the official single “In My Blood,” as well as “Lost In Japan,” “Where Were You In The Morning,” and “Youth” with Khalid, the release of “Nervous” is yet another signal that Mendes is feeling more confident about his latest album than any of his previous records. By releasing almost half of the tracks before Shawn Mendes has even officially dropped, the young singer is keeping the focus on the music and the fans. Plus, with his impressive touring track record and recent announcement of worldwide dates, Mendes and his team likely know that fans are going to shell out big bucks to see the pop star in their hometown regardless of whether they get new music before the album is released or on May 25.
Mendes has been busy promoting his self-titled album since announcing it in April. He performed for Queen Elizabeth’s 92nd birthday and has been doing the late night rounds on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and the Late Late Show With James Corden. Partnering with Apple Music, Mendes sat for an extensive interview with Beats 1 host Zane Lowe and just last week played an intimate concert for fans, where he brought his friend and mentor John Mayer on stage. Mendes also made a surprise appearance at the Los Angeles stop of Taylor Swift’s Reputation Tour, where he reunited with the woman who gave him one of his first opening act slots back in 2014.
On Sunday, Mendes performed twice at the 2018 Billboard Music Awards, with his first performance covering his lead single “In My Blood.” Mendes was later joined by Khalid and the show choir from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida to perform “Youth.” The incredible group performance made for one of the most emotional moments of the night.
Shawn Mendes is set to be released on Friday, May 25.
