Shawn Mendes Is All Grown Up With New Track ‘Ruin’

Shawn Mendes Ruin

Canadian singer Shawn Mendes has been vocal in the past about finding inspiration from fellow musician Ed Sheeran, but Mendes’ new track, “Ruin,” is taking notes from John Mayer’s bluesy guitar catalogue.

Mendes announced his sophomore album earlier this year and dropped the disc’s first single, “Treat You Better,” in June. The song follows closely to his debut record, Handwritten, but with today’s “Ruin,” Mendes’ recent comments that his next album will ‘demolish Handwritten’ are ringing true.

“Ruin” is just that good.

The new track’s the perfect bridge for Mendes to reach a new, older audience while still appealing to younger fans who’ve been supporting the Toronto teen since his Vine days. In addition to releasing “Ruin,” Mendes has also announced that his new album, due out September 23, will be titled Illuminate.

It’s no coincidence the newly revealed album cover for Illuminate features Mendes posing with an electric guitar, a big change from his trusty acoustic axe that helped the social media star score an opening spot on Taylor Swift’s 1989 Tour. Mendes picked up the electric guitar for the first time in the studio for “Ruin,” giving the song an older, more mature sound to match its heartbroken lyrics.

Although “Ruin” was written with a Mayer vibe, Mendes has reassured fans that many of his new songs will still feature the pop sound he crafted on his debut album.

“Ruin” is available on iTunes now with a pre-order of Illuminate.
