Shawn Mendes Gets Handsy In ‘Nervous’ Video

Prepare to have Shawn Mendes’ new single “Nervous” stuck in your head all day. The bouncy earworm is part of Mendes’ latest album release, with the Canadian teen dropping his self-titled third studio album at the end of May. The new album has gained critical praise of Mendes’ personal and introspective lyrics in songs like “In My Blood” and “Youth,” but that doesn’t mean the hitmaker isn’t up for a little lighthearted fun too.

Teetering on adulthood, Mendes is exploring new sides to romantic relationships in his music, especially with his new single “Nervous,” which definitely sounds like he’s coyly discussing his nerves during his first sexual encounter with a new partner. Mendes sings, “You got me acting like I’ve never done this before / I promise I’ll be ready when I walk through the door.”

The new video takes a simplistic approach, with Mendes wearing a denim jacket and black jeans while looking very James Deans with an all-white backdrop. Spending half the time strumming his guitar and the other half enjoying a full-body hand massage from his faceless crush, the music video for “Nervous” could double as a Levi’s ad from the early 2000s. It’s timeless, classic, and like most videos from Mendes, impossible to look away from.

In “Nervous,” Mendes has found his most radio-friendly release thus far in his new album cycle, with the up-tempo track about jitters from a new crush reminiscent of Selena Gomez’s “Bad Liar.” The musical connection could be thanks to singer and songwriter Julia Michaels, who wrote Gomez’s cheeky 2017 single and appeared on Mendes’ latest album on the emotional duet “Like To Be You.”

Mendes is scheduled to perform at a handful of music festivals this summer, including RBC Bluesfest in Ottawa on July 7, Festival d’été de Québec on July 8, and Cavendish Beach Music Festival on July 9. The Shawn Mendes World Tour will kick off in March 2019, with four Canadian dates scheduled for summer 2019.
