Sia is continuing to be the go-to singer/songwriter when music listeners are in need of some inspiration. The prolific artist released her seventh studio album This Is Acting in 2016, which was comprised of songs originally written for other artists.
Sia has now released her first new song and video of 2017 with the track “Never Give Up”—keeping the inspirational pop track for herself.
Working with producer Greg Kurstin (Adele, Kelly Clarkson, Tegan and Sara), Sia penned the new track for the film Lion starring Dev Patel, Rooney Mara and Nicole Kidman.
Patel stars as Saroo Brierly in this true story about an Indian-born Australian who was separated from his brother at a train station when he was five years old. Brierly was unable to find his family and was eventually adopted by an Australian couple. Later in adulthood, Brierly was able to use the internet and specifically Google Earth to find his hometown, making the single “Never Give Up” a fitting title for a film about Brierly.
Sia uses Indian influences in the new song, with a sitar audible throughout the track. The lyric video, which was released yesterday, also takes inspiration from Brierly’s story and the film Lion—showing two masked children in Sia wigs, representing Brierly and his brother. The children run around a train station and lose one another, but are reunited at the end.
Dev Patel and Nicole Kidman have both scored Golden Globe nominations for their roles in the film, which is also up for Best Original Score and Best Motion Picture – Drama.
