Talk Show History Was Made On Last Week’s ‘Nathan For You’

Nathan For You Big Suit Jimmy Kimmel Talk Show Anecdote

As entertaining as they may be, talk show anecdotes can get a little repetitive after a while. There are only so many tales about embarrassing celebrity encounters, childhood antics, and run-ins with authority you can hear before getting sick of them—which is why Nathan Fielder decided to transform the talk show anecdote game entirely.

On last week’s Nathan for You, Fielder spent the entirety of his 21-minute episode (and, apparently, a whopping $350,000) crafting the perfect anecdote to relay during a guest appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Fielder stopped by Kimmel in September and told an outrageous story about accidentally taking stranger’s suitcase after flying to an out-of-town wedding. According to Fielder, he found a baggie filled with a powdery white substance in the pocket of the stranger’s oversized suit, was stopped by the cops on his way to the wedding, and discovered that the baggie was actually filled with the ashes of the stranger’s recently deceased mother.

Now, a month later, Fielder has let us in on the fact that there’s a lot more to the story than meets the eye. And because Fielder doesn’t half-ass anything, he put in the effort to make sure that the anecdote was technically true—he doesn’t want to risk being exposed as a liar, after all. That means he convinced a couple to invite him to their wedding (after a lot of awkward coaxing), found a stranger who agreed to give him an oversized suit and a bag of his mother’s ashes, and hired an actor to pretend to be a cop and “stop” him in the middle of the road.

We don’t know who or what inspired Fielder to concoct this plan, but there’s one thing we know for sure—we can’t trust anything Fielder does in public from here on out. If he’s ever spotted buying frozen yogurt? Maybe it’s part of a scheme to take down the frozen yogurt industry and help ice cream return to its rightful place on the dairy treat throne. If he attends a celebrity party? Maybe he’s doing research to try to throw the perfect celebrity party of his own. Fielder Watch 2017 starts now.

We don’t want to give too much away, so make sure to watch the entire episode below to discover exactly how Fielder managed to pull off the talk show stunt of the century.
