Tegan and Sara are gearing up to release their eighth studio album Love You To Death and in addition to revealing new music, they’ve also just done a revealing new interview. Sitting down with Beats 1 Radio host Zane Lowe, the duo discuss how they got started in the music industry back in 1997, going all the way up to their newly announced world tour.
On making the leap from being indie darlings to the best new pop artists with 2013’s Heartthrob Sara Quin explains “Heartthrob was just the beginning. By the end of making that record we had really hit our stride with Greg Kurstin, who had produced most of it and I was already anticipating getting back into the studio with Greg and seeing what we can really do once we’ve gotten comfortable with this music.”
The twins toured Heartthrob for three years, hitting the road with The Black Keys, fun., and Katy Perry, to name a few. With the announcement of their new headlining tour taking them across Canada, the U.S., the U.K., Australia, China and Japan, Tegan and Sara are ready to play for their legions of loyal fans. “I feel like this record is the perfect follow up to Heartthrob, but I feel like it’s more muscular and exciting than Heartthrob was,” says Sara.
Taking inspiration from real-life relationships and the classic ’90s film The Crying Game, Sara says that writing the album’s lead single “Boyfriend” came with a pop music tug of war. “My big concern with pop music is always how do you make something that’s going to reach a lot of people without being dumb. How do you say something simple, but have it have multiple meanings.”
In addition to “Boyfriend,” the duo have released “U Turn” and “100x” from their upcoming album. This week’s new interview also features the premiere of yet another Love You To Death track with “Stop Desire.”
