The Weeknd turned 27 today and celebrated his birthday with a new music video featuring old friends.
Abel surprised fans by dropping “Reminder,” the third video from his 2016 album Starboy. The video takes a break from the black and red aesthetic The Weeknd created along with director Grant Singer for Starboy and the short film “Mania,” instead opting for a traditional video filled with the usual hip hop tropes of big mansions, private planes, fast cars and hot girls. “Reminder” ends with an escarpment of homes engulfed in flames, just in case we forgot it was a video from The Weeknd.
“Reminder” only features vocals from The Weeknd, but that didn’t stop the birthday boy from inviting his friends to the party. A$AP Rocky, French Montana, YG and more join in on the celebrations, but it’s labelmate Drake whose inclusion in the video makes the biggest impact.
The OVO OXO artists were rumoured to be on the outs, with Drake’s appearance in “Reminder” a clear signal that all is good once again in the 6ix.
This is the second new piece of music fans have heard from The Weeknd in only two days. Earlier this week, The Weeknd teamed up with Toronto MC Nav for the track “Some Way,” with many believing The Weeknd used the song to take shots at girlfriend Selena Gomez’s ex, Justin Bieber. Now that we know for sure The Weeknd and Drake are back on friendly terms, maybe Drizzy can smooth things over between The Weeknd and Bieber.
“Reminder” caps off a busy week for birthday boy The Weeknd, who performed his Starboy track “I Feel It Coming” with Daft Punk during Sunday’s Grammy Awards.
