Here’s Why The Weeknd Skipped The MTV VMAs

On Sunday night’s MTV VMAs, it seemed like just about every major pop star who dropped a single this year was in attendance. We saw incredible performances from Kendrick Lamar, Ed Sheeran, Miley Cyrus, Katy Perry and Fifth Harmony, but even with the packed three-hour show acting as a who’s-who of the music world, there was still someone distinctly missing piece. Where was The Weeknd?

The Toronto singer was scheduled to perform at the 2017 MTV VMAs, with his name on the line up coming as no big surprise considering his five nominations this year, including Artist of the Year and Video of the Year for “Reminder.” But when Sunday’s show came to a close, The Weeknd appeared to have ghosted on the entire evening. Now two days later, it looks like we may know what happened there.

According to TMZ, the singer is simply burned out. Having wrapped the first leg of his Legends of the Fall tour in June, The Weeknd continued on with a relentless schedule that included playing the summer’s biggest festivals, including Osheaga and Firefly Music Festival. With only a few weeks until the second leg of the Legends of the Fall tour kicks off on September 6, it appears The Weeknd is taking some much needed time to rest.

The singer has yet to confirm whether fatigue was the cause for skipping the VMAs, but on Sunday he posted a picture of what looks like The Weeknd and girlfriend Selena Gomez sitting on a private plane. At least, we assume those are seats on a private plane. Most of our knowledge about what flying private looks like has come from movies and episodes of Keeping Up With The Kardashians.

Does this in-flight image mean that The Weeknd was on his way to the VMAs? Or was he heading home? Touring fatigue does make sense, with a family emergency or sickness often accompanied by an apology tweet from artists, or in the case of Lorde, an interpretive dance performance.

The singer has remained quiet on the topic, instead posting a photo of Michael Jackson on Tuesday to celebrate the King of Pop’s birthday.

jackson & scorsese. my whole life in one picture. happy birthday to the king.
