After four years, indie darlings the xx are back with a new single and new album in the not-too-distant future. Following the release of their critically and commercially successful sophomore album Coexist in 2013, the xx have announced their upcoming third studio album I See You, set to be released January 13, 2017.
The band dropped the album’s first single “On Hold” on November 10 and quickly followed it up with performance on SNL. Now the xx have released a music video for “On Hold” and are going full-on Americana.
The town of Marfa, Texas has just under 2,000 residents, but it’s widely known in the South and among creative circles for its minimalist art installations, including Prada Marfa, a mock Prada store located in the desert.
The xx don’t focus on the town’s tourist attractions, instead telling the story of a typical teenage romance in a typical small town. The three English band members pop up throughout the video at parties and in diners, but the main storyline of the video is a couple who fall in and out of love by the song’s end and the painful reality of being a heartbroken teen. Who can cheer when the football player broke your heart?
Sampling Hall & Oates’ 1981 hit “I Can’t Go For That” in “On Hold,” the band likely drew some inspiration for their new album and video during the recording process, with parts of I See You recorded in Marfa, TX. No word on how many Big Gulps were consumed during the recording process.
